Public support for land conservation is increasing as many communities are convinced of the need for protecting land from urban sprawl.
"Nationwide, more than 6.4 million acres of open space were conserved [in the last 10 years]...that is an area roughly twice the size of Connecticut and represents a 241 percent increase... The amount of acreage protected through the volunteer efforts of local and regional land trusts has doubled in [Kentucky and Ohio] since 1990, according to a census taken by the Land Trust Alliance, a Washington-based organization that promotes voluntary land conservation."
