The reality of New York as a realm of death has divided the city's message-crafters. One faction is striving to re-brand New York as a kind of macabre Disneyland, a necropolis of stage-managed grief. In this view, Sept. 11 changed New York irrevocably, transforming it into a site of mourning for thousands of message scribblers and bouquet bearers whose concerns must be reflected not only in tourism advertising but in the stagecraft of tourism itself.
