The Army Corps of Engineers is evaluating how to turn the Mississippi riverfront in Missouri and Illinois into tourist destinations.
"The study will take 12 to 18 months and will examine the potential to develop the riverfront in St. Louis County, St. Louis and Jefferson County, and Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties, said Dennis S. Fenske, a planner with the corps in St. Louis. Fenske said engineers would investigate, for example, how to work around - or through -the 11-mile flood wall protecting St. Louis to build walkways or bike trails. Another challenge is the barge traffic that makes the river more of an industrial highway than a recreation area for boaters. But the corps will examine potential marina sites, Fenske said."
