San Francisco's Planning Department is charged with the near-impossible task of explaining how to build 2,716 new housing units a year.
"Let me just pour a celebratory cup of tea before clarifying: This means that San Francisco must explain how it's going to house its share of the people expected to move to the region over the next six years. This is the part where many San Franciscans get out a road map and start squinting at Benicia and Modesto; after all, if people will insist on having jobs here in the city -- and there is, to be fair, some controversy about whether jobs themselves aren't a little unsightly, what with all the buildings they seem to require -- surely they can't expect us to provide them with housing, too."
