Using data compiled by the Brookings Institution, the National Association of Realtors, Zipcar and others, Jett illustrates the key factors contributing to the decline of the suburbs. These include the growth in suburban poverty, the decline in vehicle miles traveled, and the changing proclivities of Generation Y, who are making a conscious effort to reduce driving, substituting social networking for driving, and preferring to live in smart growth neighborhoods; all in larger numbers than older age groups.
