"Just as shipping ports and train terminals were once catalysts for commerce, airports have become the hub for today's modern global economy, as well as a focus for new patterns of development.....A proposed development plan for Jamaica, Queens, in New York City, aims to transform and revitalize a once-prominent downtown area by drawing upon Jamaica’s proximity to JFK International Airport and the arrival of the new AirTrain terminal to be built at the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) transportation center. This, in fact, may be the first time that an airport-related development plan, typically reserved for suburban greenfield environments, is being proposed for an existing downtown area."
