Friday Funny: Best Cities for Cheapskates

Granted, this post may straddle the borderline between funny and sadly pertinent in these challenging economic times. But, we think any rankings that rely upon the number of Dollar General stores in a 30-mile radius deserves a bit of a chuckle.

Kiplinger's list was selected by evaluating places that feature low living costs and high incomes relative to those costs, plenty of free things to do (because "cheapskates enjoy getting out. They just don't want to pay a lot for the privilege"), and frugal shopping options (i.e. Dollar Stores), notes Caitlin Dewey.

St. Louis has been awarded the honorable (?) title of America's Best City for Cheapskates. El Paso, Texas and Springfield, Illinois round out the top three.

St. Louis was recognized for having roughly the same household income as average Americans, with living costs nearly 9% below the norm, a truly honorable distinction. They were also applauded for having 144(!) museums and libraries in their metro area, and for their 59 Dollar General stores.
