Copy and Paste Urbanism Completed in China

Chinese developers recently completed their controversial replication of the Austrian village of Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reports Molly Oswaks.

Last year, we brought you news of the formerly secret plans to build a copy of a scenic Austrian village in China. This week, we learned that Chinese real estate developer Minmetals Land Inc. recently opened its clone of the Austrian village of Hallstatt to the public. The duplicate village is located in Guangdong province's Huizhou city, about 100 miles outside Hong Kong.

Austrians are not amused by the Chinese developer's zeal to copy and paste details of their village half a world away. However, "at the official unveiling ceremony this past Saturday, Mayor Alexander Scheutz signed a cultural exchange agreement with the new Hallstatt, diplomatically expressing the "pride" felt by the flattered first Hallstat [sic]."
