Stringent limited-growth advocates gained the majority in Half Moon Bay's city electorate last November. However, there is still debate within the community as to how much and what growth to limit. Half Moon Bay has recently experienced severe growth, marked by high-income housing, that is changing the demographics of the community. Mayor Toni Taylor promises to defend the Coastal Protection Act, preventing more housing subdivisions from destroying the coastal environment, which makes the area so popular. The city has faced numerous land use and development-related lawsuits since the early 1990s, costing it more than $1 million.
