A decade after Mayor Williams helped inspire a revitalization strategy for Washington, DC's H Street, the formerly downtrodden neighborhood is bustling and ready for the crowning touch - a $13m streetcar system.
David Kaufman writes that the trolley is much delayed and overbudget, but should finally debut sometime in 2013. But the revitalization dreamed up by the Mayor has largely come to fruition already, with new bars and restaurants dotting H Street. In fact, President Obama recently held a fundraising dinner in one of them.
The area is still very affordable, reports Kaufman, so it is a magnet for new homebuyers who appreciate the new vibrancy and authenticity of the historic buildings.
