Sarah Laskow noted a significant milestone this week, the 15th anniversary of Stubbs the cat's election as mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska.
Stubbs has been mayor since his election, by a write-in campaign led by locals "fed up with their human rulers", in 1997. According to the Associated Press, "Although his position is honorary, Stubbs' popularity is real. His election earned him enough press to catapult the town at the base of Mount McKinley into a tourist destination...The general store where Stubbs hangs out says it gets dozens of tourists a day asking for him."
There's been no word on Stubbs' position on the city's runaway pension obligations.
