The American Institute of Architects awarded its highest individual honor to Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
"Japanese architect Tadao Ando, whose tough but sensual designs include an acclaimed new arts building in St. Louis and two projects in Chicago, was named the winner Thursday of the Gold Medal, the highest individual honor conferred by the American Institute of Architects... Previous Gold Medal winners include American architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, I.M. Pei, and last year's recipient, Michael Graves. It is unusual for the annual award, which recognizes a body of work, to go to a non-American, although previous winners included Finland's Alvar Aalto and Japan's Kenzo Tange."
