The World's Biggest Tweeters

Richard Florida looks at the results of a recent study of the world cities that tweet the most. While the top city might surprise you, it didn't surprise Florida's colleague at the University of Toronto.

If you guessed Jakarta, Indonesia led the world in most posted tweets during the month of June of this year you're either incredibly astute, or you're Barry Wellman, the leading social media sociologist and co-author of the book, Networked. Topping Tokyo, London, Sao Paulo, and New York (America's leading tweeter), Jakarta may have been the logical choice if you pay close attention to Twitter Trending Topics, which, according to Wellman, often feature topics in the Indonesian language. Surprisingly, Indonesia only ranks fifth among the top countries with Twitter accounts. 

The study referenced by Florida was released by Paris-based Semiocast.
