A study of land use issues in Ohio concludes that the state does not face an urban sprawl crisis and recommends building more highway lanes to overcome traffic congestion.
The perception that farmland is being gobbled up by urban sprawl is greatly exaggerated...After examining congestion trends, a more realistic and cost-effective approach is to seek road-based solutions...[mass] transit has simply not been shown to be a viable option to reduce congestion...Smart growth plans adopt a prescriptive view of cities and urban developments that ignore consumers wishes and substitute it with the will of politicians...Ultimately, Ohios traffic congestion problems can be solved by congestion pricing, high occupancy/toll lanes, expanding existing road capacity, and deregulating public transit."
