Mark Byrnes has collected images of 16 innovative parking garages whose inspirational designs prove that accommodating the automobile doesn't necessarily mean neglecting the neighborhood.

Miami has become a hotbed of progressive parking garage design, with highly regarded architecture firms like Herzog & De Mueron, Gehry Partners, and Zaha Hadid lining up to leave their mark on one of the city's car corrals. But as Byrnes's photo essay demonstrates, while "Miami may be the international hub of memorable parking garages,...it's not the only place to experience the genre."

"These structures are
increasingly seen as opportunities for mixed uses and attractive design
as cities become more aware of the bad impression they can leave on the
sidewalk and the skyline," says Byrnes.
