New Jersey's E-ZPass Comes Up Short

Three years ago officials predicted a $35 million profit on the new toll collection system. Today's the estimate is $162 million in the red.

"The E-ZPass electronic toll-collection system is nearly $162 million in the red in New Jersey, and the deficit could get much worse unless more toll cheats pay fines, according to projections in financial reports made public last week... But Edward Gross, head of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, New Jersey's lead agency in running the program, said the state anticipates more than $150 million in fees from companies that share fiber-optic cables installed as part of E-ZPass."
