A new bill would force the merger of northern Califronia's Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments.
"The MTC lobbies for state and federal money, plans projects and allocates about $1 billion a year for Bay Area transportation systems. ABAG studies the region's growth and development patterns, but is largely toothless when it comes to shaping that future. Both agencies share a building in Oakland. For years, regionalists and transportation experts have commented that planning growth and transportation jointly leads to more sane development and more efficient roads and transit systems."
