A well-known example of urban development, Celebration is not without its flaws.
Celebration, Florida, is certainly the most prominent of the second-generation, new urbanist communities and probably the most controversial. There are those who believe that Celebration would not have been created were it not for the Walt Disney Companys need to maximize the value of its land holdings near Orlandowere it not for the fact that even after land had been allocated for all its theme parks, hotels, and office parks, there was still substantial territory remaining. Others point out that the two additional interchanges on Interstate 4 opening up this otherwise inaccessible sector of the Disney holdings for development were granted only because a project like Celebration was proposed. This scenario, if true, would have to be seen as a smart strategic move. Editor's note: The full text of this article is only available to ULI members.
