The Iowa Chapter of the American Planning Association recently cosponsored a "box city festival" in Cedar Rapids where children participated in the development of a city, including obtaining necessary permits for construction.
The Box City Festival is a concept for teaching and involving children in the city planning and design process. Children and their parents have the opportunity to design and lay out a city, and must get permits, follow zoning requirements, and make decisions about issues such as locating a new fire station, school, landfill, and other public facilities.
