Randolf, AZ., once a lively town born during the Dust Bowl era, became the American Dream to black families that settled there.
"Unlike other communities where blacks settled in the early decades of the 20th century, Randolph is finding its decline hastened in ways beyond the usual story of grown children moving away for better jobs and older residents dying off. Slowly, heavy industries have moved into the area, taking advantage of cheap land and labor and -- people in Randolph say --the town's lack of political muscle to keep them away."
