New Jersey Fires Planners, Delcares War On Sprawl

A week after angering sprawl foes by sacking the state's entire planning office, the New Jersey governor signs a sweeping new anti-sprawl order.

From now on, all state spending will align with New Jersey's Development and Redevelopment plan. Additionally, New Jersey will provide legal assistance to towns battling developments and require school districts to consider "smart growth" elements in planning school construction. 'Last week they made an error; today they hit a home run," said Jeff Tittel, director of the state Sierra Club chapter. 'In eight days, the Governor has done more to promote smart growth than the Whitman administration accomplished in eight years.'"
