Even though New Urbanism wouldn't exist without the Bay Area and its visionaries, the movement still lacks a presence in the region. Why?
"New Urbanism may not be familiar to the masses, but in the world of architecture and development everybody knows it - and most everybody has an opinion. Supporters exalt it as an antidote to 50 years of land-gobbling missteps; critics dismiss it as sprawl with a happy face."What's indisputable is that this movement couldn't exist without the Bay Area and the way visionaries here assume that at some point the rest of the nation will wise up and follow our lead on social and environmental issues.Yet...anyone who wants to see New Urbanism's mark on the Bay Area had better know where to look...A drive through the region's fast-growing outskirts mostly shows more and more of the same old sprawl.
