As golden age of train travel came to an end, the fate of the world's train stations became unclear. But by utilizing their grand, flexible spaces, creative designers have found a variety of ways to keep the relics relevant.

Alison Nastasi gathers evidence of the continued importance of the world's train stations, even as they cease their original functions. In an accompanying slideshow, she documents 10 exemplary train stations have been repurposed into "thriving cultural centers, libraries, and more."

These include the public library inserted into part of the Haarlem train station in the Netherlands, the transformation of the Julio Prestes Train Station into the home of the São Paulo State Symphonic Orchestra, and perhaps the most famous reuse of a train station in the world - the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
