Chicago's CTA Seeks Cleaner Buses

Chicago's transit agency is considering buses that use alternate sources of energy such as fuel cells and "clean diesel" to meet federal laws.

The Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that beginning in 2006, all vehicles that use diesel engines must use ultralow sulfur fuel to reduce particulate matter--the solid/liquid matter in the air that results from burning fossil fuels.With almost all of the CTA's fleet of 1,800 buses using diesel fuel, the CTA has been testing less polluting alternative power sources, ranging from fuel cells to so-called clean diesel.
