Utilizing new approaches and new technologies for illuminating the built environment, lighting designers are helping to create safer, more dynamic, and more accessible cities.
"To foster urban growth and economic development, it has become imperative for municipalities to respond to increased numbers of people on the streets, spikes in crime and vandalism, and an understanding that light needn’t just be a deterrent for unsavory activity, but can also perform as a catalyst for new appropriations of space and informal gatherings," writes Gwen Webber. In a feature article for The Architect's Newspaper, she examines some of the recent projects that demonstrate the increasing importance of lighting design to creating "safer, more stimulating, and better functioning cities."
Among the projects spotlighted are underpasses, old factory buildings, and pieces of heavy infrastructure given new life with the creative application of light.
