Architects Insulted By Chicago Landmark District Plan

Prominent architects oppose a proposal to designate a row of historic buildings on Chicago's Michigan Avenue as a landmark district. They claim the proposal is a "veiled insult" to the architecture profession.

These buildings aren't just beautiful; they ooze history... For more than a year, Mayor Richard M. Daley has staunchly supported the idea of protecting these buildings in a special, 12-block-long landmark district... But there still is fervent opposition to the district, and it is coming from unexpected quarters -- not just real estate developers, who can be counted on to fight any regulation they regard as restrictive, but some prominent architects, many of whom typically side with historic preservationists in this kind of fight.
