Streetsblog is running a humorous, and sadly disturbing, competition to find the most moronic statements uttered by state and local transportation officials. Meet North America's "Motor Mouths".
"Recently, we asked our Twitter followers to share quotes from state and local transportation officials that reveal an underlying contempt for walking, biking, and transit," says Streetsblog editor Angie Schmitt. "Below are three examples that readers sent to us. Each comes from an official agency spokesperson, so you can only imagine what gets said behind closed doors."
Though David Wrone, spokesman for the St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic, may take the cake with his two clueless comments, this author is embarrassed to see two separate officials from his home state of Maryland represented.
Be sure to check out the comments section for more bewildering blabbermouths.
UPDATE: After this was published, Streetsblog updated and expanded its "Motor Mouths" feature with even more cringeworthy comments and a poll to choose the best/worst of them.
