Janette Sadik-Khan, NYC DOT Commissioner and president of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), discusses NACTO's mission and forthcoming Street Design Guide: a "permission slip" for cities to change their streets.

The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) is getting set to release its new Urban Street Design Guide in September, said Janette Sadik-Khan, NACTO president, in a video blog. Sadik-Khan, who is also the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation, called the forthcoming guide a "permission slip for cities to use with their engineers when they're looking to make the kind of changes they want to see."
"Cities are really on their own these days when it comes to federal policy and federal funding," said Sadik-Khan. "When you think about it, many streets in the country have been in suspended animation for 50 years."
The Urban Street Design Guide, said Sadik-Khan, will be "the green book for city street design." In coordination with the guide's publication, NACTO will launch a series of workshops and training sessions across the country.
