Keynote at Future of Cities Forum conference argued that carbon neutrality is not enough, He urged cities to adopt regenerative urban development that mimic natural processes and actively improve the environment.
Michael Braungart, professor at Erasmus University of Rotterdam and founder of the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency, said that "cities are damaging the planet because they take the raw materials from nature, use them, and then discard them as waste that is often useless and sometimes dangerous". He urged to not just use less resources but also figure out how to use waste products as a resource. Building should not just be environmentally neutral but rather actively help improve the environment by producing energy and cleaning the air. "We should not be content to simply limit the amount of damage we do, and should try to fix the planet if we can."
