Salt Lake City: New Main Street Needed

With Olympic crowds gone, downtown SLC is once again deserted. The City Council declares Main Street revitalization their top issue this year.

"Salt Lake City leaders have tried everything. Former Mayor Deedee Corradini figured sending light-rail trains down the middle of the street -- a sort of revival of the old trolley system -- would bolster businesses. The city spent $12 million to replace concrete sidewalks with granite paving stones and wrought-iron benches. The Downtown Alliance and Redevelopment Agency paid a Canadian consulting firm to tell them Salt Lake City needs more nightlife -- one in a long list of Main Street studies."
