After spending $820 million over fifteen years to rebuild 423 lane-miles along Interstate 80 from Auburn to the Nevada state border, Caltrans is finally done with the road project.
During the past 15 years, Caltrans has worked to rebuild the stretch of Interstate 80 from Auburn to the Nevada state line, north of Lake Tahoe. After spending $820 million on a series of renovation projects, an estimated 170,000 daily drivers will find I-80 more pleasant and swifter to travel on.
“These 15 projects have brought I-80 back to its original glory while updating it to modern standards,” said Rick Land, a Caltrans chief deputy director.
This segment of I-80 was originally built as part of the Federal Highway Act to coincide with the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley. Improvements included thicker concrete slabs to better endure the thousands of recreational travelers that use the road during the winter season.
