Across the United States and around the world, groups of Roman Catholic nuns are quietly supporting a supposedly extra-religious cause: environmentalism.
The work these women do spans the environmentalist spectrum, from Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs to LEED-certified building renovations to education through ecology centers.
Some of the Catholic sisters involved in environmental activism have been rebuked, or, at best, ignored by their diocesan leadership, Angela Evancie writes. Yet they persist in their faithfulness, both to the planet and to God. “I can’t leave [the Church], it’s who I am,” one nun told Evancie. “But I’m it, evolving. And that’s faith to me.”
