The Globe's Eeriest Ghost Towns

Apparently ghost towns aren't only found in America's Old West and at former nuclear test sites. Lifestyle website Thrillist has collected seven of the world's creepiest ghost towns.

"Sure, haunted houses can elicit the heebie-jeebies, but for some truly Hitchcockian horrors, take a look at these abandoned outposts," writes Alex Robinson. "They suffered some severe fates, and were left as ghost towns that're so creepy, they're probably inhabited by Macaulay Culkin actual ghosts."

The list of terrifying towns includes an abandoned city in Azerbaijan that was once home to 40,000 people and an Italian village left for dead after the Irpinia earthquake of 1980.
