A critical City Council vote over the future of Cincinnati's streetcar is scheduled to take place on Monday, the day after Mayor-elect John Cranley's swearing-in.
Mayor-elect John Cranley isn't wasting any time in acting on his campaign promise to halt construction of Cincinnati's new streetcar system. However, a council that once appeared to back Cranley's plan is now expressing some reluctance to follow his lead, reports Cindi Andrews.
One of the six (out of nine) council members who backed cancellation has changed his mind, and two others are reconsidering their positions following "efforts in recent days by the administration of outgoing Mayor Mark Mallory spell out the costs of stopping the project."
"In its final meeting Tuesday, the current, pro-streetcar council made stopping the project harder by approving the work on an emergency vote," notes Andrews. "The new vote made the project a policy directive that can be undone only by another council vote."
