Here are five urban IT projects that are set to win big this year -- and serve as examples for cities everywhere.

"Cities around the world are making great use of IT to improve citizens' quality of life, whether that means a faster commute to work, easier access to services, or enhanced community participation," writes Mary Jander.

"Tech for tech's sake has a way of turning to waste -- in the urban environment and elsewhere. But cities that don't take risks on emerging technology stand to get left behind, and that's wasteful, too."

The blog goes on to discuss five IT projects, in Glasgow, Chicago, Abu Dhabi, Barcelona, and Madrid, that seem set for success in 2014 and likely to serve as examples to cities everywhere.
