An expansive new 3D film, shown recently at the Berlin Film Festival, collects a series of vignettes that anthropomorphize buildings like the Berlin Philharmonic, the National Library of Russia, and the Salk Institute.
For fans of architecture films like those made by Thom Andersen or Heinz Emigholz, Wim Wenders has created a new omnibus film called Cathedrals of Culture, which gathers contributions by six filmmakers “anthropomorphizing six of the world’s most magnificent modern structures.”
Here’s how Peter Debruge, writing for Variety, describes the project: “half a dozen international helmers…imagine the personalities of various cultural institutions, lending voices to their unique designs while allowing cameras to explore the buildings’ unique architectural features in all their multidimensional glory.”
Among the chosen buildings, Robert Redford works with cinematographer Ed Lachman to capture the Salk Institute (with music provided by architecture aficionado and musician Moby).
