U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta called Los Angeles' new Alameda corridor "one of America's most significant transportation projects."
"The project is just one of several massive infrastructure projects under way or planned for West Coast ports. In California, $1.25 billion is being spent on two companion rail links: one in San Gabriel Valley and the other in Orange County...To lessen traffic congestion, half the corridor sits in a trench, 33 feet deep and 50 feet wide. Thirty bridges were constructed over the top of the trench to connect roads and walkways."
