Dallas Housing Department Scrutinized

“Of all the mysterious inner workings of Dallas City Hall, few are as inscrutable as the plainly named Housing Department,” claims a recent editorial in the Dallas Morning News.

The city is already troubled by a recent investigation by HUD into affordable-housing practices that violate federal civil rights laws. In response, “City Manager A.C. Gonzalez has called for a full-scale review and reorganization of the Housing Department.”

“There is plenty to look at, from questionable 'development partners' to land deals that are difficult to track to the shuffling of different funding sources to cover expenditures,” says the editorial.

The review has implications for the department’s largest ongoing redevelopment project—the redevelopment of Bexar Street.
