During the go-go days of the late 1990s, few technology stories were more over-hyped than the rise of Lower Manhattan's Silicon Alley. To the often-breathless New York media -- whether in national or local publications -- the "Alley" was widely seen as the Gothamite counterpoint to the booming technology districts of Silicon Valley, Austin and Raleigh-Durham. These days, however, the always-trend-obsessed New York media seems to have soured on the city's software and new media center...Yet just as they over-emphasized the Alley's rise...today's pundits may be underestimating both the New York tech community's persistence and its critical importance to the future of the city...
