A website called I Quant NY has produced a string of posts examining recent ridership data released by Citi Bike. The visualizations and maps produced by the site make a good case for the value of open data.
The I Quant NY website is the work of Ben Wellington, who teaches at Pratt Institute’s Graduate Center for Planning. The site shares data analysis and visualizations produced by Wellington and his students, and the site recently caught the attention of Next City writer Nancy Scola as well as Streetsblog NYC writer Stephen Miller.
I Quant NY started its examination the day after Citi Bike released a new batch of “granular ridership data” with a post called “Mapping Citi Bike’s Riders, Not Just Rides.” The post included findings about the media age and genders of users at bikeshare stations around the city.
A later post located the nightlife of the city, as navigated on Citi Bike, and another provided additional details about the gender divide of riders using the system.
