Building Support for Affordable Housing

Owiso Makuku provides analysis of a recent study called “Building Support for Affordable Homeownership and Rental Choices” by Janet Viveiros and Rebecca Cohen published by the Center for Housing Policy, which endeavors to answer the question “How can we build support for affordable housing?”

Makuku’s analysis provides key findings in two categories: 1) public opinion and 2) language and messaging recommendations. For the former, Makuku cites evidence in the report that housing cost issues “tend to have the most traction in high-cost areas” and that “Homeownership solutions are particularly attractive to the public, among others. For the latter, Makuku recommends focusing on specific beneficiaries and appealing to core values.
