Washington D.C. Getting a Giant Greenhouse

A company called BrightFarms is developing a 100,000 square-foot greenhouse on a vacant lot in Washington D.C. The farm will provide jobs for locals and reduce the environmental footprint of the food sourcing process.

“The new greenhouse, in D.C.’s Anacostia neighborhood, will grow about 1 million pounds of produce every year for delivery to 30 local Giant grocery stores, along with neighborhood food banks,” According to Adele Peters.

The company has already completed roof-top farms on both apartment buildings and supermarkets, but the new farm’s position on a vacant lot works for both BrightFarms and the surrounding community. According to Paul Lightfoot, CEO of BrightFarms, “if you’re BrightFarms, you want to be in low-income neighborhoods so you can help provide some produce and jobs. Every city has land for people like us.”
