While many states are rushing to figure out how to regulate transportation network companies like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar, Arizona came very close to exempting the companies from the taxi and limo regulations.
Earlier in the week, the Arizona House of Representatives approved House Bill 2262, which would have exempted transportation network companies like Sidecar, Lyft, and Uber from the regulation of taxi and limo companies.
But Republican Gov. Jan Brewer “nixed House Bill 2262, which laid out rules for ride-sharing businesses to operate in the state,” reports Mike Sunnucks. The companies are currently unregulated.
The veto is a setback for transportation network companies, which have encountered varying different degrees of resistance in state and local municipalities around the country. The Arizona legislature, however, was the first to make the case for a degree of deregulation.
