A recent post by Steven Yates shares a presentation on protected intersections, which can extend the safety provided by protected bike lanes into otherwise exposed intersections.

The video embedded below, the work of Nick Falbo of protectedintersection.com, makes a point about the importance of protected bike lanes in encouraging bike use before arguing that protected bike lanes are also needed to provide completely safe passage for bike riders. The video also breaks down the design elements of the protected intersection.

Says Yates: "The design is not standard in the US, but neither were protected bike lanes up until a few years ago."
