This article looks at a unique program that is teaching 50 Alameda, Californiahigh school students the intricacies of urban planning. Two senioreconomics classes teamed up with the Fisher Center for Real Estate andUrban Economics, which is part of the Haas School of Business at theUniversity of California at Berkeley, to examinewhat constitutes successful redevelopment. At the end of the program, thestudents presented their plans to a panel of professional urban planners.According to the article, the goal of the exercise was to make studentsaware of the conflicting demands involved with development, "so they willbecome better informed and involved citizens."
