"The transformation of Turner Hill is being repeated across Massachusetts, as developable land grows scarce and estates and former state hospital grounds are increasingly targeted for major commercial and residential development... On one hand, ''filling in'' these sites with compact development is seen as less environmentally destructive than building subdivisions and office parks in the countryside beyond Interstate 495. On the other hand, the estates are viewed as historically important open space by neighbors and preservationists, and, for them, putting up houses and office buildings seems a crass destiny for such stately grounds."
