With more than 84,000 mobile homes, Polk County, Florida has emerged as a locus for mobile home living.
"Why is Polk, population about 500,000, king of mobile home living in the Sunshine State? It's "mobile home friendly," says Christina Hummel, a senior county planner. "If your neighbors have a mobile home, you can have one, too. It's a majority rules situation." Some mobile home owners own their land. Others live in one of the county's 400 parks and pay lot rent. Some rent their trailers. Mobile homes seem to be popular among winter residents and retirees and are increasingly popular with families on limited budgets, say industry representatives. "You can get in a brand new mobile home for as little as $28,000," said Scott Davis, a sales executive at Oakwood Homes."
