California Population Grows To 35 Million

Annual state numbers indicate that California's population grew by 1.9 percent in 2001.

"The population grew by 652,000 in 2001, the department said. Los Angeles remained the state's largest city, with 3.8 million people. San Diego remains the second- largest city, with 1.3 million residents, followed by San Jose and San Francisco.Unlike the U.S. Census, which attempts an actual head count every 10 years, the state updates its population estimates each year based on a variety of economic and demographic measures. "
