Buses and trains are key to Michigan's competitiveness. Unfortunately, the state has spent the last decade laying more pavement.

Across the nation, states are confirming that public investment inworld-class bus and train service attracts significant private capitaltonew and improved transit corridors. Michigan has plenty of opportunitytostimulate such growth if state and regional officials get on board andhelpnew transit ideas become reality. But the Institute's Kelly Thayerreportsthat Michigan's transit spending has bounced up and down since 1990 likeapassenger on a poorly maintained bus.
