It will take the brightest minds in architecture to save suburbia, says columnist John King.
"A few years back, one of the smartest people I know was explaining how suburbs need to get religon - not the spiritual kind, the architectural kind. Instead of houses being segregated from work, and work segregated from shopping, everything needs to be mixed together. And the more folks per acre the better, so that commuter trains or buses will have plenty of willing riders.... The fact is, suburbia will never morph into an old-fashioned city; there are different expectations about daily life. But there's no reason that new growth -can't take a shape that offers an alternative to the spatial segregation that's now the norm."
